Las Vegas Family Vacation

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Never in a million years did I ever think I would say that Las Vegas was a fabulous place for a family vacation. My memories of Las Vegas include leather pants and leopard print and lots of things my 4 year old does not need to know about. So when some new family friends invited us to join them in Vegas for the weekend, I was cautiously optimistic. But I must say it was the best 48 hours we’ve had in a long long time. Vegas was fabulous!

When we landed in Las Vegas we quickly settled into our room at the Mandarin Oriental. It is a gorgeous hotel, very low key and has none of that icky smoky smell you get at most hotels. My son loved pressing all of the magic buttons to open and close the curtains. Once we were able to peel him away from that great toy, we went over to Serendipity for a yummy family dinner. I had the most delicious grilled cheese sandwich. Yum!

On Saturday we enjoyed the hotel pool and then the moms went off for an afternoon of shopping (Chanel and Louis Vuitton around every corner – love that!) while the dads spent a few hours with the kids – the M&M store, the lions at MGM, the Ferrari store at the Wynn, and of course a trip through ‘the castle’ and a happy meal at the McDonalds at ‘the pyramid’. The hotel was able to arrange for Mary Poppins to come take care of our boys why the adults enjoyed an incredible dinner at StripSteak – Michael Mina’s amazing restaurant. In lieu of bread and butter they serve crispy French fries with dipping sauce. Need I say more? The husbands went out for a night (and morning of gambling) and we went back to get a good night sleep with the kids.

We wrapped up the weekend at the hotel. The boys enjoyed a few hours splashing at the pool while my friend and I went to the gorgeous Mandarin Oriental spa. Between the steam room, and bubbling pools and perfectly relaxing facial – it was a blissful end to an amazing 48 hours. A huge thank you to our new friends Colleen, Andrew and Cooper for a perfect 48 hours.

Zoku Popsicle Maker

zoku popsicle maker review

Yes – the Zoku Quick Pops popsicle maker is just as easy and cool as it seems to be in all of the colorful pictures in the Williams-Sonoma catalog. Just pour in some juice and voila! The best part about the Zoku is the instant gratification. In just about 5-10 minutes your kids can make their very own sweet treats. The 2 layered pops above are the fanciest ones we have made so far.

This week we will try to make some of the characters. The Zoku is perfect for summer play dates – a great way for the kids to be creative and cool off too.

I stumbled upon this photograph tonight as I was poking around online when I should have been updating Sweet Peas & Stilettos or sleeping. I just love it and I hope you do to. I found it on Table Couture who found it on We Heart It and I think it was taken by Hot Chocolate With Cookies. Perfect cupcakes for fashionistas of all ages….Yum!

Candy Rings

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Believe it or not but these enchanting colorful rings are edible! Personally, I think they are little works of art and might be afraid to eat them, but how fun would it be to wear one of these on your finger or better yet, give them to friends as party favors at your next bash. Chef Natascha de los Angeles has combined her love of haute cuisine and fine arts to bring you a museum worthy collection of handmade, edible creations, that will look as good on your fine china as they will in your jewelry box. Her company Artesanal Sweets, will even work with you to do custom creations too.

I used to think that RingPops and candy necklaceswere cool but Aresanal Sweets has really raised the bar on candy jewelry to breath taking new heights. Yummy!

Mattie Luxe

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

I often rely on a select group of friends to keep me in the know about cool new products they stumble upon. It is always fun to find the friend-of-a-friend who is embarking on a new business and being able to help them spread the word. I am also a little partial to other moms who are budding entrepreneurs…

My friend Shelley lives in Los Angeles and one of her friends, Andi, recently launched Mattie Luxe – the go to spot for super chic placemats. The best part about them is that they are totally customizable. You get to be the designer and because she has such a great collection of bold graphic prints (zebra print, polka dots and zig zags galore) and 20 modern colors to choose from – you can’t go wrong. Check out the inspiration gallery to see tons of fabulous placemats. I felt a little like my son in the Lego store saying to myself, “I want that one, and that one next to it, and that one, and one of those, and this one too, and the one over there.” If you can’t get your creative juices flowing, don’t worry, she’ll design them for you.

If you are a fan of Jonathan Adler, Tory Burch, Trina Turk or Kate Spade (four of my favorite brands!) you will loves these placemats. They have a very similar sense of spirit, color and design. And they are only $15 each!  Of course I will put these on the top of my gift list, but I also think designing a mat for every member of the family will be a fun creative activity we can all do together. And the next time I host a dinner party, I could make one for every guest that they could take home at the end of the night….the possibilities are endless…

Caviar Kids

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

My friend Elaine gave my son and I the incredibly generous gift of not just one but two Caviar Kid gift packs from California Caviar Company and I have to tell you we had a blast. This is the finished product above. (As a little side note, I was kind of excited to have an excuse to bring out my wedding china for the occasion.) Anyhow, these Caviar Kid gift packs are so cute. In addition to the caviar, they come with your pick of a t-shirt or bib (organic cotton of course), a cute little faux mother of pearl spoon, crème fraiche and either the puffed pastry shaped like fish (shown in my photo) or Whale Tails™ organic corn chips (these were super yummy too). There is even a card inside with a little game and fun facts so you can teach your child about ocean conservation and sustainable seafood. To top it off the whole thing comes in a cheerful, yellow, 100% recyclable, totally reusable, insulated lunch bag. (Was that too many adjectives to describe one bag??) Basically, I think these are fun, unique gifts for children of all ages.

Just imagine your daughter’s next tea party when she serves caviar to her friends and teddy bears….what a great photo op!

In case you questioned how much he really liked it – here is my son Carl enjoying his puffed pastry fish, organic crème fraiche and trout caviar.

If your child squirms from the caviar ‘pop’ – you can just pop open a bottle of champagne and enjoy a little treat for yourself…

The Container Store - New Low Prices

SweetHarts & Sweet Peas & Stilettos are joining together to bring you super sweet 2 for 1 play dates! One of the most common questions I hear from moms is simply, “What are we going to do today?” Moms are always looking for fun and new play dates and activities that will keep the kids entertained (and that we can enjoy too!). If you are a mom living in the Los Angeles area (or have a mommy friend who lives in the area) you must know about SweetHarts – the super sweet shop owned by Melissa Joan Hart and her mom, Paula, that is located in Sherman Oaks, California. (A little personal side story – I started my chocolate spoon company as a teenager with my mom so I totally love the fact that another mother-daughter duo is embarking on a sweet business together!) SweetHarts now hosts playdates onsite at their adorable location. There are a number of different themes (fairy tales, candy crafts, bingo and my favorite – karaoke) and they are scheduled all throughout the day.  You can enjoy a latte or a frozen yogurt with a friend while the kids enjoy the activity. (By the way – they do birthday parties too!)

I told you the place is super cute – here is a little peek. I love the purple walls and the furniture too! Anyhow – here is the scoop. Mention Sweet Peas & Stilettos and you get a very special 2 for 1 offer.  A parent can bring a child in for a play date, and they can get a second play date free, or if a parent comes in with 2 kids, one child’s play date will be free. So treat yourself and your kids – you deserve it!

For a current schedule and more play date details check out the “Parties” section of the SweetHarts website. To reserve your spot for any play date, please RSVP: email: or phone: 818-788-5004.

Cupcake Wall Decal

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

It is no secret that I love love love cupcakes. Well, really, who doesn’t. I close my eyes and forget about all the butter that makes them so delicious and just enjoy each and every bite. My son likes to lick off all of the frosting and then proceed to tell me he feels too sick to eat the actual cake part. More for me!

For a calorie free cupcake treat, check out this adorable cupcake chalkboard wall decal from WallCandy Arts. Yes – it is actually a chalkboard too. It will sweeten up any playroom or bedroom and would also make a great party decoration too. Yummy!
