Bunk Beds – Tips & Things to Consider

A bunk bed is a big purchase. As with every large furniture item there are a number of things to consider when making your decision.

1) Unit Size – The most obvious question to ask yourself is, “How much room do I have?” Some bunk beds are stacked so the beds are directly above one another and others let you set them up in more of a ‘T’ shape. Think about what format would work best for your room and your space limitations.

2) Bed Sizes – When I was growing up, the only bunk beds I can remember were twin-over-twin. Now there are a number of twin-over-full bunk bed options. I love this idea because it allows the bed to sort of grow with your kids. It is also nice to have an extra full size bed in the house when you have family or other overnight guests in town. If you have the room, it might be a cool option. Some children like to sleep with a whole zoo of stuffed animals and a big full size bed can be a simple way to keep them off the floor.

3) Style & Color – Obviously you want a bed that will fit the decor of your home and your child’s bedroom. I know some times the purchase of a bunk bed coincides with converting a baby’s room into a ‘big kid’s’ room so you may be changing or updating colors and styles. You can select one in a simple wood finish or go for color. There are lots of great options to consider.

4) The Loft Bed – One cool option in the category of bunk beds it a loft bed with a desk underneath. You get the space savings of combining the bed and the desk in the same area. Some kids just want to have a bed that is “up in the air” and this might be a cool option to consider.

5) Assembly - In my house the biggest question is simply, “Who is going to put this bunk bed together?” Before you have these huge boxes arrive at your front door, consider how it will all get put together. Some shops offer assembly services so you don’t need to worry about a thing.

6) Bedding – Pay careful attention to the details of your bunk bed before you purchase new bedding. As you can see above, with the guard rails or sleek design, their may not be room for oversized duvets and comforters. You will want to find bedding that actually fits the unique design of the bunk bed.
