Human Rights, Advocacy & Financial Empowerment. There are women and children all over the world who need our help, and there are many ways that each and every one of us can help. Whether you support a micro loan, email your state’s senators about a cause you feel strongly about, or donate a suit to help a local woman in transition, you can help to make a positive difference in our world.
Children’s Defense Fund
“CDF is the foremost national proponent of policies and programs that provide children with the resources they need to succeed. We champion policies that will lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care, quality education, and a moral and spiritual foundation.”
Raising Malawi
“Since 2006, Raising Malawi has been dedicated to bringing an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s 2 million orphans and vulnerable children.”
The Global Fund for Women
“The Global Fund for Women is an international network of women and men committed to a world of equality and social justice. We advocate for and defend women’s human rights by making grants to support women’s groups around the world.”
Vital Voices Global Partnership
“Vital Voices Global Partnership is the preeminent non-governmental organization (NGO) that identifies, trains, and empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the globe, enabling them to create a better world for us all. We provide these women with the capacity, connections, and credibility they need to unlock their leadership potential.”
Women for Women International
“Women for Women International mobilizes women to change their lives through a holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of women in conflict and post-conflict environments.”
Kiva
Kiva’s mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. The organization is the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website where individuals can lend money directly to entrepreneurs all across the developing world. Here is an article about Kiva that was published in Stanford Magazine.
Career Closet
“We are an organization designed to empower women to re-enter the workplace equipped with everything they need to make a great first impression and land the job they want. Our services begin with business attire, but what we really provide is confidence.”
Grameen Bank
Professor Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank and its Managing Director, received the Nobel Peace Prize for pioneering a new category of banking known as micro-credit, which grants small loans to poor people who have no collateral and who do not qualify for conventional bank loans. The bank has amassed millions of borrowers, 97 percent of whom are women! Their website is a good place to start to learn more about micro-credit and its impact.
Association of Albanian Girls and Women
“The “Association of Albanian Girls and Women” (AAGW) is a nonprofit humanitarian organization created by and for victims of human trafficking in Albania. It is estimated that there are over 6,000 Albanian girls and women who are currently or who formerly have been victims of illegal trafficking for the purpose of enforced prostitution, one third of whom are younger than eighteen. A primary aim of AAGW is to help former victims of trafficking reintegrate into Albanian society. AAGW promotes this goal by supplementing and supporting job training, job placement, and handicraft production programs. Equally important, since AAGW is an organization run by and for trafficked women, its daily operation also offers important leadership and managerial experience and provides a voice for this marginalized group in Albanian society.”
Captive Daughters
“Captive Daughters is the first anti-trafficking group established in California. We focus solely on ending the sexual bondage of women and children. The organization was inspired by Sandra Hunnicutt’s, the founding director’s, stay in Nepal, where she learned firsthand about sex trafficking. Upon returning to the United States in 1995 she began researching trafficking and discovered a fragile network of groups struggling to educate the public on trafficking both here and abroad. In an effort to strengthen that movement, she and a committed group of individuals established Captive Daughters as a non-profit organization in 1997.”
