Homeless Mothers & Children. Women and children living on the streets and in homeless shelters are particularly vulnerable. There are organizations focused specifically on the needs of homeless mothers and they are helping these families transition to productive, healthy and safe environments.

East Oakland Community Project

EOCP empowers homeless individuals and families in Alameda County to regain a life of self-reliance. They provide dignified emergency and transitional housing and compassionate, comprehensive support services that prepare homeless people to successfully transition to well-being. Their newly built Crossroads building has 125+ beds and is the first “green” homeless shelter in the country. In addition, they provide organic produce, electronic health records and safe housing for women. They are truly leading the way.

Homeless Prenatal Program

“Since 1989, the Homeless Prenatal Program has been providing homeless parents and pregnant women with the support and access to care necessary to have a healthy baby. This includes everything from prenatal care, counseling and advocacy to referrals for housing, substance abuse problems and legal aid. Just as importantly, HPP offers a nonjudgmental and unconditionally supportive environment where these women can rebuild their confidence and their lives.”

Project Night Night

“Project Night Night is dedicated to improving the lives of homeless children, one sweet dream at
a time. To this end, Project Night Night donates individual tote bags each filled with a security
blanket, an age-appropriate book, and a stuffed animal to children (ages 0-10) in homeless
shelters. By providing objects of reliable comfort, Project Night Night seeks to advance the
emotional and cognitive well-being of each child we help.”

The National Center on Family Homelessness

“The National Center on Family Homelessness, founded in 1988, is the nation’s foremost authority on family homelessness, and the only national organization dedicated solely to helping homeless families. We conduct state-of-the-art research, develop and share innovative solutions, and create public awareness about the special needs of homeless families. Our mission is to end family homelessness in America.”

National Center for Homeless Education at the SERVE Center

“The National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) provides research, resources, and information enabling communities to address the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness.”

National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth

“NAEHCY connects educators, parents, advocates, researchers and service providers to ensure school academic achievement and overall success for children and youth whose lives have been disrupted by the lack of safe, permanent and adequate housing.”

Hearts of Gold

“Hearts of Gold works to improve the lives of 450+ children and 375+ mothers annually at three Manhattan shelters. Sadly, half of the women and children at these shelters are victims of domestic violence, some have additional children in foster or kin care, and others spent their own lives in foster care.”
