  • Please keep in mind the safety of the children we support.

My New Red Shoes

Mission Statement:
The mission of My New Red Shoes is to help homeless children look and feel confident as they start the school year while educating the community about the challenges facing homeless families. To achieve this goal, My New Red Shoes provides homeless children with brand new clothing and shoes, and it rallies youth and adults around this effort by raising awareness about homelessness.

Organizational Overview:
Over 5,000 Bay Area school-aged children experience homelessness every night. The average age of these children is only 5 years old. Homelessness has a devastating effect on a child’s education. Homeless children are twice as likely to repeat a grade in school and are significantly more likely not to finish high school.

My New Red Shoes was founded in 2006 by Heather Hopkins after hearing a story from her mother that changed Heather’s life. Growing up in a poor family, Heather’s mother dreaded the first day of school, so worried was she that she wouldn’t have anything presentable to wear when she walked through her classroom doors come September. Her mother’s story made a strong impression on Heather and motivated Heather to help change the story for other children.

My New Red Shoes helps homeless children put their best foot forward at school through two unique programs. Clothing for Confidence provides homeless and very low-income children with $50 gift cards to major clothing retailers and brand new shoes, offering them the opportunity to celebrate back-to-school season with pride in a way that the isolation of second-hand clothing closets never will. Providing clothing and shoes to homeless youth not only increases their school attendance, it gives them a much-needed confidence boost. The Kids Helping Kids Youth Leadership Program educates students about local family homelessness and empowers them to become positive change agents, directly and positively impacting their community. Kids Helping Kids utilizes the service learning model to offer tailor-made curriculum, philanthropic opportunities, engagement in civic matters, and helps students directly solve real-world issues in the homeless community.

Since 2006, My New Red Shoes has clothed over 4,600 homeless children and empowered over 1,500 youth to support their homeless peers. In 2010, we plan to clothe an additional 3,000 children and will continue to expand our education programs. My New Red Shoes believes in the ripple effect that a heartfelt gift can make in the life of a child who is feeling alone in her circumstances and has faith in the power of children to change the world. Planting the seed of compassion is the first step toward creating community change.

Success Stories

Martha
Six months ago, Martha fled her abusive partner and the father of her children. Martha and her four children stayed with her uncle in his one-bedroom apartment until the landlord threatened to evict them. Martha and her children were forced to move into a local family shelter. All four of Martha’s children were starting new schools in August and were very anxious. Martha knew her kids desperately needed new clothes and shoes; the thought that she would not be able to provide for them was overwhelming. After receiving gift bags from My New Red Shoes, Martha was able to focus on the other essentials that would help her family to succeed.

Luisa
Luisa was unable to work after breast cancer and a double mastectomy. While she planned to return to work cleaning houses after her reconstructive surgery was complete, Luisa’s loss of income made it difficult for her family to make ends meet. With the gift from My New Red Shoes, Luisa’s two children were able to look forward to the start of the school year, a brief respite from the fear and anxiety that had troubled them in months past.

George
George is a six-year-old homeless boy. Despite the hard times they have endured, George and his family have positive attitudes and even help out in their shelter’s afterschool program. Because George’s mother receives only $600 per month in CALWORKs benefits, buying new shoes and clothes for George and his nine-year-old sister would mean their mother would not be able to buy food and other household necessities that month. When George received new shoes and a $50 gift card from My New Red Shoes, he proudly carried his shoes around the shelter offices to show the staff. He could hardly wait until the first day of school to show his shoes and clothes to the other children in his class.

AJ
Elizabeth and her husband Eric have six children between the ages of five and twelve. The family had been suitably housed and making ends meet for many years until an accident left Eric crippled. With Eric no longer working and needing assistance in his daily tasks, Elizabeth struggled to care for her large family. The family was forced to move into a homeless shelter and soon after their arrival, received gifts from My New Red Shoes. Although every child in the family benefited greatly from this donation, AJ, the youngest, was perhaps the most affected. He was worried that his hand-me-downs would make him stick out in kindergarten, but when he received a bright blue gift bag from My New Red Shoes containing his first-ever pair of brand new shoes, AJ thought, “Shoes with laces; I really am a big boy now!” AJ’s mother was also appreciative of the gift card that enabled her to buy school uniforms for her six children who were now able to start their school year with pride.

Homeless Agency
“The mothers in our program have low or no income, they will not be able to buy new school clothes or shoes for their children’s first day back to school. My New Red Shoes has helped make their back to school experience positive.”
