Smithsonian Sleepovers

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Are you planning to be in Washington D.C. this summer? If you are headed that way with your children (ages 8-11) you should check out Smithsonian Sleepovers. You and your kids can actually spend the night in the National Museum of Natural History. There is a scavenger hunt, an IMAX film, and a guided tour. You’ll hang out with dinosaurs and wake up next to a whale – how cool is that!

Career Closet

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

“At Career Closet, we work every day believing that behind every successful woman is another woman who believes in her.”

Career Closet is a Northern California based non profit “designed to empower women to re-enter the workplace equipped with everything they need to make a great first impression and land the job they want.” Last year they provided business clothing and interview advice to over 1300 disadvantaged women. The clients leave feeling empowered and confident to overcome their personal challenges of poverty, single motherhood, and lack of education and land a job.

I am so happy to share the new news that just this week they have opened a new Career Closet Boutique, Twice the Style Too, in San Jose (43 East Gish Road, Suite 100). Their boutiques are great for women looking for super deals on designer clothes, handbags and accessories.  The stores are stocked with the high end donations and all the sales benefit the organization.

If you are interested in learning more about Career Closet, please check out their website for more information on how you can help. They are always looking for donations and volunteers!

Hair Tips from Ian

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Ian is my go to hair stylist when I am in Los Angeles. He is one of the few people who can convince me to take my hair out of my mainstay ponytail. Cut or color – he is your guy. He has been kind enough to share some tips with everyone. I told him that moms don’t have a lot of time for primping so we needed something quick and easy. His solution: A blowout in five minutes.

Here goes: Roll up all your hair in four or five big rollers. (You can let your kids stick one or two in their hair too so they don’t get jealous), apply heat for just a bit, run around and get everyone ready for school or summer camp, remove the rollers when your hair cools and gently brush through. You will be the cutest mom in car line.

If you are ready for a new summer ‘do – get an appointment with Ian Martin at Joseph Martin Hair & Beauty on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Crayola Window Washable Markers

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

I took my son to a really fun birthday party on Saturday. The kids were very busy and full of laughs playing in the massive bounce house and unleashing their inner rock star playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Then one child went to snoop around the presents and found a box of Crayola Window Washable Markers that was attached to a large gift. She opened up the markers and went straight for the nearest window. Within 2 minutes all of the kids were clamoring for a pen, eager to fill the window with color. All of us parents looked upon in utter amazement. Needless to say – I will be stocking up.

French Sole Shoes

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I bought a pair of French Sole Shoes a few months back and have been very happy with my purchase. I of course bought a silver pair because I have been in my multi-year, never ending metallic obsession. For summer these colorful ones just might do the trick. Just what the doctor ordered.  They have a huge selection of flats in lots of styles and colors….definitely worth a peek.

Vida Bags

Friday, June 18th, 2010

It is so great to see children of celebrities who are already actively engaged in philanthropy and are using their famous last names to make a difference.  Katherine Schwarzenegger (Maria Shriver & Arnold’s daughter) has created these fun VIDA bags to help increase awareness of global maternal mortality and to diminish the staggering number of mothers around the world who die during pregnancy and at childbirth. Proceeds from the bags benefit the White Ribbon Alliance and CARE – two great organizations. Let’s all do our part to help moms everywhere who need a helping hand.

Swedish Clogs

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I am half Swedish so I love love love all things Scandinavian (the Swedish royal wedding is just a few days away – congrats Crown Princess Victoria!).  One great Swedish export is the clog. They are super comfortable, easy to get on and off, and much cuter than you may think. I think they make a great addition to any mom’s closet, especially if you want a little change from basic flats or flip flops this summer. My friend Helen got these silver clogs and they are adorable. We wear the same size and I was very tempted to just slip them on and walk right out the door. Of course, I want them in silver (or maybe gold!) but they come in a whole rainbow of colors if metallic just ain’t your thing.

With my Louis Vuitton Neverfull packed to the brim with weekend essentials, I was ready for a weekend of ‘glamping’ with my boys and 10 other families. I will be honest – I don’t enjoy camping. It is not fun, nor is it relaxing. I do love being outside in beautiful places and being away from home and endless to-do lists.  I fully embrace this trend towards fancy, glamorous camping (now known as ‘glamping’) and a great place to do it is Costanoa, in Northern California. I had told a few girlfriends about the place and before I knew it 10 Silicon Valley families had found a weekend to embark on a fun filled getaway.

I opted for the log cabin that comes with a fireplace, deck (great view and swing), stereo, refrigerator and fluffy spa robes. Never once did I hear my husband complain wishing that he was pitching a tent. The surroundings are gorgeous and the weather was perfect. We had an amazing day at the beach (it’s a long but pretty walk – I just kept my fingers crossed my son wouldn’t ask me to carry him), we roasted marshmallows, we lounged in the jacuzzi, we sat in the grass and watched with wind blow the leaves in the trees and just enjoyed a few days with no cell connection and no TV (they do have WiFi). Yes they also have a spa, a delicious restaurant and lots of activities too. If you like to camp, you can also pitch a tent and barbeque. Something for everyone.

This is the first time we’ve traveled with more than one other family and it was great. Because the place is so spread out, we all had a little alone time and we all kind of moved to our own schedules. Everyone brought yummy food, wine and cupcakes to share. The kids loved the dirt, the sticks, the sand, the rocks and the millions of stars that filled the night sky. A good time all around.

Some of the moms were talking as we were packing up and we thought this was the perfect spot for a girls getaway – a few days of yoga, wine, good food, great friends and a little peace and quite. Sounds perfect.

Fred & Friends Face Plate

Friday, June 11th, 2010

I am happy to tell the world that my son happily ate his broccoli, tuna, hummus, green beans and noodles without a fuss at all tonight. I am very lucky I know. Tonight I must thank Wow Wow Wubzy for distracting him while I slid those greens right in… I stumbled upon these really fun food face plates today from Fred and Friends. I know my son will love them, and I might just need to get a set for me and my husband too. Just in case I don’t have Wubzy around – these might just do the trick.
