Kate Spade Paperless Post

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

I love paper and I love stationery. I have been tempted many many times to frame all of my favorite note cards and hang them in my office. In fact I have been know to buy note cards to do just that. Some day I will actually get organized and will buy the frames and get out the hammer and nails to make it happen.

Even though I love paper – I also love Paperless Post and the way they have transformed digital communication. Part of the vision of Paperless Post is that “Communication is an extension of personal style: how you say something is often as important as what’s being said.” It is so true! A simple note on a fabulous card can make such a powerful statement. An email does not have to be so darn boring and there is so much more you can do than simply change your font.

One of the latest designers to partner with Paperless Post is Kate Spade New York. There are now 70+ designs to choose from to make you online correspondence stand out from the crowd. Add a little flair to all of your emails and check out the fantastic online stationery designs from Kate Spade. You can even get a sneak peek at their holiday cards too…

Christmas Card Preview

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

I can’t believe I am posting anything about Christmas or the holidays in September because it really goes against everything I believe about the holidays. I am the first to admit I freaked out when I saw Christmas lights at Target last week! I am trying to be a little more organized and on top of things this year so I have been busy updating and creating some new pages on Sweet Peas & Stilettos to feature all of the fabulous holiday cards and invitations I can find and have just been having so much fun. I have to tell you, the selection of cards is better than ever this year.

Whether you are looking for something super simple, super modern, one photo, lots of pictures, traditional colors, funky colors, you name it – there is everything. So you won’t be too overwhelmed – I have scoured all of my favorite sites and pulled together my favorites. Come take a look at the Photo Christmas Cards 2012, Modern Holiday Cards, Photo Hanukkah Cards and Holiday Party Invitations. I will continue to keep them updated with the latest designs, coupons and promo codes too.

Modern Mommy of the Week – Jessie Salas

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Modern Mommy of the Week:

When I arrived at my son’s new school a few weeks ago, I met one mom in particular who was full of energy and had this incredible joy about her. She seemed so genuine, so happy (even at 7:45 in the morning with kids hanging on every limb!) and so fun – immediately I wanted to be her friend. That woman is Jessie Salas from San Jose, California. Jessie is mom to 3 very cute kids – Addison (Addie) who is 5, Hudson who will be turning 3 in October and Sydney who is just 3 months old. Jessie left her hectic high-tech career to start her own photography business. Like so many of us, she wanted to make money and have a career, but also wanted to have flexible hours so she could spend more time with her growing family. Over the last 5 years she has grown her business tremendously. Silicon Valley moms go straight to Jessie Salas because they know she will capture unique images of their children that they will treasure forever.

At Sweet Peas & Stilettos we LOVE shoes. Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?

My favorite pair of shoes – DKNY strappy sandal pump. I purchased them twelve years ago (I know, right?!?) at Macy’s in San Francisco. They have aged so gracefully (although they have had some cosmetic surgery doe over the years…and might even be in need of some now). I was with my mom when I made my purchase and these shoes have been on many dates (including one of the very first I had with my now-husband Kris), assisted me through numerous job interviews and spent time being paired with skirts and jeans alike…they were single girl shoes, shoes I wore when I was newly married and now serve as the occasional mama’s night out selection. To me they have a personality of their own and I simply love them. They are shoes I will NEVER part with…no matter how ratty they might become.

We want the scoop – please tell us all about your fabulous company!

Photography has been one of my passions since childhood…in fact I tell clients all the time that I can still remember my grandpa showing me how to use his gigantic Polaroid camera. I just loved the instant gratification of snapping a shot and watching as it processed before my eyes.

During college I spent time focusing and learning about photography but it wasn’t until my daughter was born that I decided to pursue my hobby as a fully fledged career. For ten years or so I had been a software sales rep working for organizations including Sun Microsystems, Network Appliance and Webex. I always thought I’d return to the world of technology however after falling in love with Addie within milliseconds after she arrived, the thought of ever leaving her seemed completely foreign to me…with the desire to still contribute to our household while remaining home to watch my daughter grow, Jessie Salas Photography was established.

It began as one, maybe two sessions per month with families of three or four…within a short period of time it had grown to a few sessions over the course of a weekend…before I knew it my referral base was expanding and inbound interest for my ‘little photography business that could’ was up to about ten calls or emails per week…covering the span of moms-to-be, their newborns, young children and families of all sizes.

I have found that my photography business allows me to integrate my love of art with my love for meeting new people, hearing their stories, watching their families interact and most of all encapsulating THEIR moments in time (and these moments are so fleeting). I am inspired by the thought that the instances I capture will be memories relived for many years to come. And that the time I spend with each family is fun (not just for me but for them as well!).

Design your own Shoes

shoes-of-prey design your own custom shoes

Unleash your Inner Jimmy Choo & Design a Pair of Shoes

We are all guilty of ‘getting creative’ with the Bedazzler or puffy fabric paint at least once in our lives. Growing up it was always fun to play fashion designer with friends – making our own Flashdance sweatshirts, braiding sparkly colorful headbands, and sewing those oh so cool mini skirts. Now that we are all grown up – it is all about the shoes. Luckily, the Bedazzler is tucked away, and technology is here to help. Watch out Manolo Blahnik – here we come…

Shoes of Prey makes fabulous flats, heels, wedges, sandals and more that you can’t get anywhere else – because they’re designed by you, for you. Feeling creative? Pull out your laptop, curl up on the couch, and play with their easy 3D design tool to choose the shape, color and height of your shoes. There are about 12 different basic styles to start from. Then you simply click on the little circles (shown above) and try lots of different combinations. Of course I love the glitter and animal prints, but there is also an array of leather, silk, snakeskin, cotton and vegan options too. They will be custom made to your specifications and shipped anywhere in the world in around four weeks. Another similar company worth checking out is milk & honey.

Sounds like the perfect one-of-a-kind Christmas present to me!

I don’t know about you but I always find myself day dreaming about our next family vacation. I think my son will actually be able to survive a longer flight now that he has his iPad fully loaded with games and movies. I want him to see the world – just like I did as a kid. I have my fingers crossed that our next family vacation will be FREE.

Join me in entering this simple contest to win a FREE Vacation! Tea Collection has partnered with Jetsetter and is offering you the chance to win a Nordic Getaway + a Tea Collection gift certificate to pack your suitcase full of super cute Tea clothes for you and the kids. What a perfect combination!

I have visted Denmark, FInland, Norway and Sweden (and of course would love to add Iceland to my list too) and I have to tell you they were all absolutely wonderful. So many Americans think that Europe consists of Paris, London, Rome and Barcelona. They don’t even think the venture beyond those famous cities. Scandinavia is spectacular! I know I am a little biased since I am half Swedish, but they are simply gorgeous countries with friendly people and spectacular sites to see (and great shopping too!).

So come on, enter to win the vacation giveaway right here. Don’t miss your chance because this contest ends on 9/25/12. Good luck! If I don’t win, I at least want you to win…

Modern Mommy of the Week:

Renee Caldwell from Keller, Texas is this week’s featured Sweet Peas & Stilettos Modern Mommy of the Week. Renee is not only the founder of Stork Vision® Prenatal Imaging Centers, she is also the mom of four children – two daughters ages 9 & 13 and two sons ages 18 & 11. Based on her own experience as an expectant mother, Renee understood the emotions and excitement when a woman sees her baby for the first time. She wanted to create a safe and comfortable environment where families can truly enjoy this incredibly special moment.

At Sweet Peas & Stilettos we LOVE shoes. Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?

My favorite shoes right now are a pair of rope wedge sandals with a braided leather top by Indigo. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned.  They have a flexible rubber sole but are still totally fashionable! I bought them in an adorable boutique called “Clicks” in Chicago- thinking I was hot stuff only to find out that Indio is the sister brand to Clarks (hello- my Grandmother’s brand!!!)  I now own them in two colors and will be taking them with me to Europe next week. They are the perfect travel shoe!

We want the scoop – please tell us all about your fabulous company!

My company, Stork Vision 3D/4D Ultrasound introduces expectant parents to their developing babies with safe, high quality, 3D & 4D ultrasounds performed in a home theater atmosphere.   My own pregnancy experiences inspired me to establish our first Stork Vision Ultrasound center in 2004 and I am thrilled to have opened our 23rd store this summer.  The key to our success is our belief in quality, safety and unsurpassed customer service.   From the moment you walk through our doors, you will be taken care of by our endearing, knowledgeable staff.

cool-boots-girls-Kenneth Cole Reaction Heart Wink Boot

With fall right around the corner it is time to find a great pair of boots for your little girl. There are so many options and styles to choose from this year – it should be pretty easy to find a funky pair your daughter will love. Pictured above are some very cool Kenneth Cole Reaction Heart Wink Boots in plum. I love this color with the patent finish. They are also available in pewter and black too.

cute-boots-girls-Sorel Tivoli Rain Boot

I know a lot of girls like pink but I just love the yellow and green color combination of these Sorel Tivoli Rain Boots. Yes – you can buy them in ‘pink lady’ or ‘bright rose’ but if your daughter already has too much pink her her wardrobe – go for this pair. How cute are the little polka dots?

My 5 1/2 year old son loves Legos. Virtually every table in our home is covered with Legos – the dining room table, the table in the playroom and the coffee table in the living room – you name it. We are left with the small table in the kitchen for all of our meals and are forced to get very creative whenever we have guests over to eat.

Right before school started I treated my son to a trip down to LEGOLAND California Resort in Carlsbad, which is just north of San Diego. It turned out to be a perfect 2 day adventure that he absolutely loved. I can’t recommend it enough.

We stayed at the Grand Pacific Palisades Hotel & Resort that is literally right around the corner from LEGOLAND. Overall the hotel was great – the rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable. I do have a few little tips and things to share. As you can see by the photo above – we carried our own luggage up on the luggage cart. My son thought it was so cool, but I wish we had valet parked so someone else could have dealt with our over-packing…I liked the fact that the hotel had a free shuttle over to the park that was relatively easy to catch. On our first day the driver gave us the wrong phone number to call for our return trip. That was a bit unpleasant after 9 hours at the park, but we got back to the hotel eventually. The second day things went more smoothly with the shuttle. As far as food goes you have to walk over to the restaurant across the parking lot to eat – it is not right in the hotel. I wished they had had a coffee shop or lobby bar right in the hotel so I could have more easily picked up a latte in the morning or a glass of wine after my long long day at the park. The restaurant was a little on the loud side so the 2nd night we ordered dinner to our room. My son loved his mac ‘n cheese and I had a great grilled shrimp salad.

If you were to ask my son, the highlight of the hotel was definitely the kids pool and water play area. After a long drive to get down to Carlsbad he was thrilled to throw on his bathing suit and head to the fun. In addition to the slide and water attractions they had a huge pool that was just 3-4 feet deep. All of the kids were splashing and playing together and there were plenty of chairs for the parents. One piece of advice – be sure to ask for pool towels at the concierge or front desk before you head over – just to be sure you get some.

LEGOLAND was made for my son. I bought the two day pass and am really glad I did. We were at the park for 9 hours the first day and 5+ hours the second day. Going during the week was wonderful because the lines were very manageable. At some of the more popular rides, they brilliantly have tables of Legos strategically placed so kids can build and create while parents hold their place in line.  The Lego play area is all gated and you can always see your kids while you are in line.

One thing I especially liked about LEGOLAND California was the variety of activities and entertainment for my son. He got to drive a car (four times in fact), ride a pirate ship, watch a 3D movie, dig for dinosaur bones, splash in the water, play miniature golf and build and race Lego cars with other kids. I was surprised by how much he loved just playing with the Legos – in some instances more than being on the rides themselves.

My number one tip is to bring a stroller – even if you don’t have a baby. I was happy not to have to lug my bag around. It also helps in case you bring a change of clothes or food. (We were soaked after the pirate ship ride and I would have done anything to get out of my wet pants.) I love the fact that they let you bring in your own food and beverages too. I was happy to have a few snacks I could just grab from my bag. They also have some of the best amusement park food. Right near the entrance there was a little store where you could get turkey sandwiches, string cheese, yogurt, fruit, granola bars, gluten free cereal, and that much needed morning latte. You weren’t stuck with 5 pound chicken legs, blue cotton candy and 80 ounce soda cups like you are at some parks. I even spotted a room for nursing mothers and a vending machine with diapers and other mommy essentials. So smart!

And yes – I would recommend a little visit to the LEGOLAND Water Park. Pictured above is an area where kids can create their own Lego rafts and float around a little river. As you can see it was great fun for my son. I was lucky that I never had to put my bathing suit on and actually join him in the water at the water park – I just wanted to stay dry (and yes I can’t help but wonder what hundreds of children are doing in the water now that they are newly inspired by Ryan Lochte’s admissions) and I was still able to keep a close eye on my son.

So yes – I would highly recommend a trip to LEGOLAND California to anyone. To be completely honest, I would say my son actually enjoyed it more than Disneyland. If you have any questions at all about visiting the park, please don’t hesitate to send me an email. I am sure your kids will love it just as much as mine.

Modern Mommy of the Week – Kristina Rust

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Modern Mommy of the Week:

With the holidays right around the corner (so crazy – not sure how summer flew by so quickly!) I have had photography on my brain. It is that time of year to start thinking about holiday photo cards and taking that perfect picture of your family. This week’s Sweet Peas & Stilettos Modern Mommy of the Week is successful family photographer, Kristina Rust of Kristina Rust Photography. I think I am busy with one son, but she is able to juggle her busy life in Northern California as a mom to 4 children – one daughter (13) and three active sons ages 15, 11 & 11.

At Sweet Peas & Stilettos we LOVE shoes. Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?

My favorite pair of shoes are my Cole Hahn sandals.  I bought them for our trip to Europe this past summer.  I wanted something comfortable, yet stylish and knew I’d be on my feet all day playing tourist.  These shoes were perfect.  They were comfy(having a Nikeair sole) and the metallic color added a little pizazz.   Stylish and sensible shoes DO exist.

We want the scoop – please tell us all about your fabulous company!

I am a life-style, family photographer.  My passion for photography and love of documenting life’s everyday moments inspired me to start my own business 4 years ago.  My style is casual and relaxed and my sessions are laid back and fun.  I strive to capture your child’s personality (no fake smiles) and create images that you’ll love to display for years to come. I truly feel that my images tell stories and there is nothing more gratifying than having my clients tell me how much they love their photos.
