Photo Christmas Cards 2013 – Tips & Little Things to Consider

Sending out holiday cards should be a fun and special project for every family. It is a great way to celebrate Christmas, the New Year and the holiday season with all of your friends and family, both near and far. Here are a few little things to think about as you get ready to select and order your holiday cards, invitations and photo Christmas cards.

1) When do you want to send out your holiday cards? I know some friends who have the envelopes addressed before Thanksgiving, and some people even get ready before Halloween. I on the other hand wait until the first week in January and send out Happy New Year cards. Everyone will be excited to hear from you and see the latest picture of your family so simply find a time that works best for you and your schedule to get your Christmas cards in the mail.

2) Do you want someone else to address and mail your photo Christmas cards for you? A number of these companies, including Paper Culture, will actually address and mail your Christmas cards for you for the price of the stamp alone. It is obviously a very convenient option if you don’t plan to include little personalized notes on every card.

3) What sort of design do you want on your 2013 photo Christmas cards? Some people like modern Christmas cards with bold fonts and grahics, while others prefer more traditional holiday cards. I am sure you will find a design (or many designs) that will just speak to you. You will find some that will have more images, colors and bold type on the cards and other Christmas photo cards and holiday cards will be much simpler. There is certainly a perfect holiday card to fit everyone’s taste and budget.

4) Do you want to combine your holiday card with another note? If you are looking for ways to save a little money, think about combining your New Years or holiday cards with your thank you notes. That is what I did! Just be sure to select a card that gives you ample space to write a little note. You can thank your family members for the Christmas gifts and share family updates at the same time. I also combined our Christmas cards with our baby announcements another year which was a great way to save a little time and money.

5) Do you want to include a photograph and create a special holiday photo card? I am 100% all for including a photograph of your kids. Who doesn’t want to see how much your children have grown? I don’t need to send a picture of myself to everyone – though it is fun to receive cards from old college friends. There are some very very cute holiday cards without photos (especially ones with great art) so I can see why people select those too…

6) If you are going to use a photo to create a special Christmas photo cards here are a few more items to consider:

  • Do you want to simply use a photo of your children or do you want to include other family members or pets? Remember to book your photo session early and make sure you have outfits selected for everyone in the shoot. (Treat yourself to a blowout so you look extra cute too!)
  • Do you want the photograph to be black and white or in color? A lot of times the design of the card will dictate what sort of picture you will use. If you know you really want to send out a color photo in your photo holiday card, just remember that when you are looking at cards. Some people may photograph their family wearing a color theme that matches the card they have chosen, or vice versa, they will find a card that matches adorable outfits you have for your children.
  • If you want to use a photograph from a professional photographer for your family photo Christmas or holiday card, be sure to discuss this up front. You will need to be able to get a digital photograph from the photographer.

7) Do you have a preference about the format and shape of the card? Who knew there were so many options when it came to selecting a modern photo Christmas card? You get to choose from flat Christmas card, folded holiday cards, and really fun circle cards (that look like Christmas ornaments). You can even pick between rounded corners or sharp ones. Some Christmas cards are even like little books, which is a fun solution to share lots of great family photos. There is no doubt you will find a style you love that will express your personality and allow you to showcase your photographs. And don’t forget if you select a square Christmas card for your family it will require more postage!

8 ) Have you ever thought about the type of card stock you want for your Christmas card or holiday party invitation? Do you like pearly paper or do you prefer a matte finish? Do you want really thick card stock or would you prefer to keep it thin and a little less expensive? And did you know you could select modern holiday cards that are made from recycled materials? So many choices to choose from….

9) Do you want room to write a note? Think about how much you want to write on your Christmas cards. Personally, I think it is nice to add a personal touch with a short hand-written note. If you plan on doing that, just make sure the card you select leaves you enough room to jot down a few words. Many holiday cards are two-sided now so it is something you don’t want to forget. And be sure to buy a new pen so the fresh ink will help you get your thoughts and best wishes on paper.

10) What about the back of your photo Christmas Cards? We all get so focused on the photo and design of the front of the card, it is easy to forget about the back. Many services including Minted, have very cool options for the back of your card. The possibilities for the back range from a colorful graphic pattern, a photo, or even text. It is a great way to further personalize your 2012 photo Christmas cards.
